Upstatement
Upstatement is a Boston-based digital product studio founded in 2008 that combines journalism-inspired storytelling, design, and engineering to build websites, applications, and digital brands. I find the work by this studio interesting due to the use of typography and editorial applications to tell stories in a digital world.
One project I admire is the one for Nike. The project was to reimagine Nike’s global brand and make Nike one branded house and not a house full of brands. This has streamlined the design for Nike by creating campaigns and brand guidelines that set the company up for the future.
I find interesting the application of type within the new branding. Using the same typefaces but changing up the layouts, making them more dynamic, has given a subtle and contemporary refresh. The use of texture, both physical texture like grain, etc., and typographic texture, adds another dimension to the graphics. I think the branding suite feels cohesive through the use of typography pulling the main messages together.
